Why are Sealants important?

The natural crevices and grooves on the chewing surfaces of primary and permanent molars trap food and debris, thus promoting a hiding place for bacteria to form acidic biofilm which might increase the risk for cavities. Similar to sealing a patio deck to protect the wood surfaces, sealing groovy tooth surfaces with a dental material has been proven to help prevent cavities. The AAPD approves the placement of pit-and-fissure sealants as an integral part of the patient’s overall caries/cavity management.
